I'm not sure how long it's been there (at least since September, when this post came out), but java now supports a splash screen option on startup:
-splash:<imagepath>
show splash screen with specified image Nifty.

This will just let bad developers write apps with longer and longer startup times. For users, splash screens are a terrible feature.
